40 | === Summary === | ||
41 | |||
![]() |
6.1 | 42 | Mars analog astronauts (AAs) undergo a rigorous selection and training process to |
43 | ensure crew cohesion and mission success. However, even the healthiest,
44 | strongest individuals may face psychological challenges due to various
45 | environmental stressors including isolation, confinement, close living quarters,[[image:1629013073345-374.png||style="float:right"]]
46 | monotony of food, delayed communication with MSC, time pressure, scientific or
47 | engineering failures, sleep difficulties, fatigue, etc. In our effort to further human
48 | space exploration in a safe and effective way, we must thoroughly understand and
49 | protect the psychological well-being of the analog astronauts, before, during, and
50 | after the space analog mission.

6.1 | 52 | This project aims to study analog astronauts anxiety and depression levels before, |
53 | during and after space analog mission in order to better understand psychological
54 | well-being in response to known and unknown environmental stressors. This project
55 | further aims to study the correlation between AAs crew anxiety and depression
56 | levels and the possibility of a “third quarter phenomena” (TQP) whereby the first
57 | quarter of the mission may be characterized by excitement or anxiety, the second
58 | quarter by boredom and depression, and the third quarter by increased emotional
