Organisation Italian Mars Society; ÖWF

Summary

Joint virtual/real EVAs to be conducted, where 2 astronauts will be conducting a traditional EVA wearing the Aouda spacesuits, and 2 others will be conducting a very similar EVA in a virtual environment provided by V-ERAS. All four EVAs will be managed by the mission control centre. Performance of mission controllers and the requirements on them will be assessed, and the performance of the virtual environment will be compared to the traditional EVA for astronaut training purposes. Astronaut performance will also be assessed.

The experiment will have 2 Motivity/Motigravity units at the Field base, and 2 units at the MSC. Two of the four will be used along with two EVA astronauts in both Aouda space suits. Therefore the experiment takes place over 3 locations. Requirements are listed for each Motivity/Motigravity station, and for the EVA.

Objectives

  • Verify the robustness of the V-ERAS functionalities (e.g. see, if a virtual rover could be effectively commanded by an IVA crewmember).
  • Define data acquisition protocols, parameters and define the list of observables and how the data analysis is done.
  • Train the analog astronauts and mission controllers.
  • Take timing, develop intelligent feedback questions.
  • Define a list of interview questions.
