29 | The HUMAIN experiment studies the interaction between humans and machines, specifically | ||
30 | between the analog astronauts and the Aouda spacesuit simulator. | ||
31 | The field of HMI (human-machine interface) not only includes control devices such as switches, | ||
32 | keyboard or touchscreens; but also, the displaying of information, such as sound or graphical displays. | ||
33 | In particular, the ability to correctly and effectively display information plays a major role in high | ||
34 | workload, time-critical, hazardous environments such as aircraft piloting or performing EVAs. It | ||
35 | is crucial in providing good situational awareness and allowing proper risk assessment and | ||
36 | management. | ||

39 | The Aouda space suit simulator includes a head-up display (HUD) that allows the visualization | ||
40 | of information such as sensor data, procedures, videos or maps. The experiment focuses on the | ||
41 | use of the Aouda HUD to increase situational awareness within the space suit, for risk | ||
42 | assessment and risk management during EVAs. | ||

45 | The basic hypothesis to be tested is whether making trend data available from sensors, | ||
46 | specifically the sensors for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and temperature within the suit, helps improve | ||
47 | the AA’s perception of risk. This boils down to the research question, “do the CO 2 and | ||
48 | temperature readings acquired during an EVA statistically differ if the AA is shown only current | ||
49 | CO 2 and temperature readings, vs. trend data for the last few minutes?” |
